One of the best herbs for the edible landscape, English Thyme is a low-growing, perennial herb that's ideal for planting as a ground cover or near walkways. Its dark-green, aromatic leaves perfume the air. The leaves, used either fresh or dried, add flavor to soups, sauces, beans, meat dishes and more. The dried leaves are also a great addition to potpourri or homemade soap. In addition, thyme attracts butterflies when its flowers bloom in late spring to early summer. A native to the Mediterranean, thyme grows best in full sun. Zones 5-9.
