A Quick Guide to summer Pruning Video

Felix from Gurney's Seed and Nursery prunes a Flat Wonderful tree, explaining the importance and objectives of summer pruning for the tree's health and fruiting potential.

Hi everyone, Felix here with Gurney's and I want to talk to you a little bit today about summer pruning and we're working with our Flat Wonderful tree here right now that, in an earlier video, this is a tree we're renovating and it was too tall and we brought It down severely, we pruned it really hard and as a result of that, you get a lot of flush, lot of vigor coming off of all your growth and you can see how dense it's become. And if you look at the interior here, we just have a lot of foliage density and, as a result, moisture can accumulate in there. You don't get good foliage dry down and if you're spraying your tree, you don't get good fungicide penetration and insecticide penetration into the interior, so the summer pruning is just to help reduce some of that interior foliage. That's what I'm going to do. Aright, so I finished cleaning up the interior, you can see the center is a lot more open, better air flow. There I've thinned out some of the vigor and density on these outward shoot proliferations that we have so as a result, we're going to get more breaks, more wood production that's better quality, bud development next year where we get our flowers from. So the summer pruning, especially when you're renovating a tree that has gotten out of hand, really helped control the shoot vigor that you get from the heavy pruning that we did on this tree.
