Southern Grove Sunflowers
Zones 7-10
There's nearly nothing so satisfying as the height of a sunflower—an easy, direct-sow flower that shoots up toward the sky in cheery yellows. For Southern gardeners, direct-sow plants can be a challenge, but sunflowers prevail overheat and drought. Sunflowers are typically warm-season annuals that thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, and they can handle drought, clay, and other mainstays of southern gardening. In areas that don't frost, sunflowers can be sown directly into the ground quite early in the season for a long and vibrant display.
