Flowering shrubs are beloved in the gardenmdash;and this one bursts into bloom when other flowers are fading. Northern Belle Hardy Watermelon Crape Myrtle produces panicles of watermelon red flowers in midsummer and fall. Its deciduous, glossy green foliage has a bronzy cast in the spring. In frost-free areas, this shrub grows up to 54 in. tall with an upright, vertical, hedge-type habit. In zones 5 and 6, the plants are likely to die to the ground over winter and return in the spring. When this happens, they usually grow about 36 in. tall. Northern Belle Hardy Watermelon Crape Myrtle is part of the new Northern Belle Hardy Crape Myrtle series developed by Dr. Keith Zary. Grows best in full sun. Zones 5-9.
