This classic apple tree is a favorite for baking into pies and desserts or using for caramel apples. Granny Smith Apple Tree produces bright green, sweet-tart fruits that are crunchy when fresh and soft and juicy when cooked. The fruits ripen in late October—and they store extremely well, lasting up to six months in storage. Granny Smith Apple Tree has low winter chill requirements, making it suitable for the South. While it's self-pollinating, planting it with another variety such as crabapples, Liberty or Red Delicious, can ensure a bigger crop. 400 chill hours are required for a successful harvest. PruningPrune in late winter/early spring, while trees are still dormant. There are normally two goals when pruning an apple tree: 1.
