Grow a conversation piece in your backyard. Native to the eastern United States and Canada, the cold-hardy Pawpaw Tree produces unique fruit with a soft, creamy texture and wonderful banana custard-like flavor. Because the fruits don't ship or hold well after ripening, they're seldom found in grocery stores. The best way to get them is to grow your own! The 3- to 5-inch, aromatic fruits ripen in late August to early September and are excellent for eating fresh or made into ice cream or other recipes. The tree, too, will impress. Growing 15-30 ft. tall with a pyramidal shape, the Pawpaw Tree's light green, large, tropical-looking leaves are sure to stand out. Zones 5-9.

PruningYou can prune them back to about a 3 feet high and they will then throw several new branches from below the cut. Each branch will bear fruit and, provided that you fertilize the tree well, the fruit will be of a good size. You can repeat the pruning on each of the branches once they again become too tall to harvest easily.
