- Harvest in fall
One of the more popular gourds to grow! Birdhouse Gourd vines bear light green, hourglass-shaped gourds that are the ideal size for hanging birdhouses. Gourds are usually 12-24 inches long with an 8-12 inch diameter. Gourds should be harvested in the fall when the shell becomes hard and glossy and before a killing frost. To make a birdhouse, allow the gourd to dry, cut an entrance hole, remove the seeds, and varnish or wax the gourd. Gourd seeds can be started indoors or direct sown into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Plant in hills, with about 5-8 ft. between hills. 95 DAYS.
