Spring is one of the best times of the year, and not just because the temperatures are rising and our blood pressure is normalizing after the string of socially distanced yet stressful holidays. The Most Popular Fruit Pie by State
Despite their peach-related moniker, Georgians slanted toward key lime pie instead. Meanwhile, Floridians stuck to their state pride, heralding key lime pie above all lesser fruit pies. Don’t come between a Floridian and their pie-related state pride!
Illinois, New Hampshire, and Vermont know how to stick with a classic, all selecting apple as their favorite fruity pie.
North Carolina and Rhode Island voted for applesauce pie, which can be amazing when the applesauce is homemade from freshly picked apples.
The Most Popular Fruit Pie by Region
Surprisingly, grape pie is the most popular pie in the Northeast and second most popular overall. It is also the top fruit pie in California, the heart of American wine country. We suppose grapes in pie is a reasonable evolution of a nice Merlot.
Strawberry pie took charge in the Midwest and South, while the West had a three-way tie among banana cream, grape, and razzleberry pies. Fitting with the theme of not choosing just one fruit, razzleberry pie itself is made with blackberries, raspberries, and blackberries all mixed together.
The Most Popular Fruit Pies in the U.S.
Strawberries and pie are clearly a perfect match, as it was by far the most popular pie in the nation with 14 states backing it. The runner up, grape pie, had just 6 states.
We think razzleberry pie and huckleberry pie, each just winning one state, are severely underrated. Huckleberries grow in the spring in zones 5 through 8, have lax lighting requirements, and reward growers with a divine tart-sweet taste
If you want to get on the grape pie bandwagon, or grow fresh ingredients for your all-time favorite, Gurney’s has you covered with fruit-bearing plants from strawberries to peaches to, yes, grapes that are easy and fun to grow in the spring.
