Tomatoes: The versatile garden favorite
Tomatoes offer so many delicious possibilities: slice them, sauce them, turn them into salsa! Selection Tips: Determinates ripen over 3-4 weeks, on bushy vines that usually don't need staking. Indeterminate vines continue to grow and produce fruit all season until frost. The large vines need support.
Healthwise: Both raw and cooked tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C and a good source of vitamin A. Tomoatoes also are a source of lycopene, a powerful substance that researchers believe may help prevent prostate cancer in men.
Key to tomato disease/pest resistance:
Letters following the names indicate specific disease resistance. "V" stands for verticillium wilt disease; "F" for fusarium wilt disease; "N" for root-knot nematodes (a soiling dwelling pest common in the South); and "T" for tobacco mosaic virus.
