Gorgeous even when it's not in bloom! The Red Astilbe has feathery plumes, 2 feet tall, which tower above foot-high mounds of burnished bronze-hued foliage in late spring through midsummer. Ideal for cutting if allowed to open fully. Prefers partial shade, but will do well in sun with regular watering.

Comments: Astilbe grows in shade as well but better blooms will be seen with some sun. Keep soil constantly moist but not soggy. Fertilize in the spring with a 5-10-5 fertilizer. Mulch with 2-3 inches of organic matter around the base of the plant throughout the season. Plant with ferns (complementary), hosta (complementary), viola (similar bloom time), and Monarda (similar size, later bloom time).
