Peeling Habit Reveals Attractive Bark Coloration
Named for its bark-peeling habit, this upright deciduous shrub reveals a variety of colors from tan to reddish brown as each layer is sloughed. Small, 2- to 3-in. flower clusters of soft pale pink appear in early to midsummer and last about 2-3 weeks. In the fall red fruit replaces the blooms and the medium green foliage turns to rich yellow-bronze. U.S. native grows 6-10 ft. tall and prefers full sun to partial shade. Bareroot.
Zones 2-8.

Unsung hero in the landscape!
Reviewed By: Wendy (Blanding, UT)
On my 2.5 acre landscape, this shrub is a standout among lovely lilacs, forsythias, sand cherries, dogwoods, sumacs, spireas and evergreens. It's tough (water regularly first year or so, until established), drought tolerant, and beautiful. It blooms all over in white blossoms, (description says pink, but the picture shows white, which is what mine looks like), on a vase-shaped bush with arching stems. The blossoms hang on, and then like magic, change into red fruits. It looks like it blooms white, and then blooms red! The fruits hang on into fall, when they mature to a rusty tan-ish orange, which is lovely with its changing leaves. Then, the shredding, colorful bark is so interesting all winter. Truly a four season landscape choice.
