Chinese Elm Hedge
Chinese Elm Hedge
Our Fstest Grower!

  (8 customer reviews)

Chinese Elm Hedge forms a dense screen in a hurry. Grows to 50 feet but looks great trimmed as low as 1-2 feet. Gets thick with regular pruning. Leaves hold late, turn red and purple in fall. Adapts to less-than-ideal conditions--tolerates drought and pollution, resists pests and disease.

Hedges divide a yard into separate spaces for outdoor entertaining, for gardening and for setting off a stretch of lawn. They are far more attractive then fencing and much less expensive.

Bareroot.

Zones: 4-9.

Comments: QUICK GROWING HEDGE. RESISTANT TO DUTCH ELM DISEASE. GOOD FOR URBAN AREA AND TOLERATES POOR SOIL. MAY BE PRUNED TO ANY HEIGHT. PRUNE 2-3 TIMES 1ST SEASONS TO ENCOURAGE BUSHY GROWTH. The root system of the Chinese Elm does have very large roots which can grow great distances from the trunk (up to 100' in 10 years). The roots are usually located close the surface of the soil, but they can occasionally lift sidewalks and get into sewer lines and drain fields. One thing you should do is explain to the customer that possible damaging roots are a fact of life with any fast growing tree, not just the Chinese Elm. Any fast growing tree will have a vigorous, wide spreading root system that can cause damage if planted too close to sidewalks, sewer lines, and drain fields.

Astonishing how quickly they grow and fill out after the roots get established. We have long winters, no spring, and oh, about 1 week of summer, and 5-year old trees are taller than the house. They were planted in a spot that had been a gravel drive for 40 years and only lost one. They have branched out so well that this past winter the bare trees offered decent screening. Japanese beetles are attracted to them, but put out twice as many leaves after the beetles' "pruning." Easy and fast to grow.

Can't kill them!
Reviewed By: Ruth (Reno, PA)
We planted our hedges about 12 years ago and rarely trimmed them. Presently they are about 30 feet high. At times we have cut them down in the spring- to inches from the ground- and they shot back to 8 feet by summers end!
