A perennial shrub in zones 8-11, this lovely little plant makes a perfect houseplant no matter where you live. Just 10 in. tall and sprinkled with snowy star-shaped flowers, Sweet Leaf is happy on any sunny windowsill. Incredibly, dried leaves are nearly 300 times sweeter than sugar. Sweet Leaf is very low in calories and is gaining popularity as a sugar substitute. Can be used in baking and to sweeten coffee or tea. Just chewing on a few leaves is sure to knock out the worst sugar craving!

Comments: 300 times sweeter than sugar. Treat as a houseplant in winter. However, it can be set outside during the summer months. HARVEST AT END OF SEASON. LEAVES ARE SWEETEST WHEN MATURE AND TEMPERATURES ARE AROUND 60 DEGREES F. SWEETENER IS BEST EXTRACTED BY SOAKING DRIED LEAVES IN BOILING WATER, SQUEEZING THEM DRY, AND REMOVING THEM. LIQUID CAN BE STORED IN REFRIGERATOR AND USED AS NEEDED. DRIED LEAVES ARE APPROXIMATELY 10 TIMES SWEETER THAN AN EQUIVALENT WEIGHT OF SUGAR (1/2 GRAM OF DRIED LEAVES EQUALS 5 GRAMS OF SUGAR).

This plant arrived with only 3 viable leaves on it and the pot dry. Snail mail for sure. Does taste sweet and will be good for cooking if it lives after re-potting.

Interesting and prolific

I received this little guy in my Spring shipment. It arrived in good shape with a little foliage- about 5" high. I put it in a self watering container and gave it to my mom in SC to care for while I was away during the Summer. Three months later it was a goliath of a plant. It didn't stay compact at all, but rather sent several long woody stems draping over the sides of the container with lots of foliage on them. I've removed those stems in an attempt to encourage the plant to stay small and bushy. The leaves are certainly sweet- but also a little bitter in this summer heat. I'm guessing they sweeten up more when the temperatures fall off later in the season. Overall I'd say it's a worthwhile investment. Next time I'll wait until Fall to trim back this zealous plant so the leaves will be sweeter.

We just started growing our plant and just one taste from a leaf and you know this plant lives up to its reputation.. it is very very sweet and goooood.
