Mitten-shaped leaves smell like a fragrant combination of vanilla and orange. (The roots are used commercially for distilling perfume and root beer!) Spectacular color in fall--yellow-to-orange, scarlet-to-purple foliage. Grows 30-60 feet tall.

Gurney’s trees are shipped as dormant bareroot stock that leafs out into handsome, healthy specimens that do our lawn and landscape proud.

beautiful small shrub tree for the Northeast
Reviewed By: Jeff (Kingston, NH)
It took a long time for me to get one of these Sassafras trees to take, I'd made the mistake of buying online small ones bareroot and they never took, they have a large tap root and you need to get one started in a pot and transplant carefully. I now have one that is 2-3 feet tall and it has such unusual leaves and bark and the leaves turn many shades of yellow, maroon, red and orange. I believe it should only get to be 10ft. or so where I've planted it under a few much larger trees with 5 or more hours of dappled sun, an hour or two of full sun in the afternoon. I plan on taking good care of this sassafras and hopefully it will be a beauty for the fall!
