Red Lake Currants are the cold-hardiest of quality plum-red currants. Not much of a wait involved--often bears its full-flavored fruit the first year after planting, on 2-year-old wood. Reliably large yields. Self pollinating.
2 year No. 1 plants.

Many of the fruits are native species that grow wild in various parts of the country. They are very adaptable and generally carefree. A few are delicious when eaten fresh; others make excellent desserts and wines.

They looked like a couple of foot long sticks with roots on one end, with proper planting (root end down) and a little care they started to grow. Not much to see for the first three years or so, then before you know it branches four or five feet high, some strait up, some arching to the sides. Chains of tiny light green bloosems in the spring turn to chains of bright red pea sized berries in July, heavy enough to bend down the branches. Any already leaning to the sides will be arched over to the ground. They berries are tart, between rasberry and cranberry. Makes great jam. Next planting I would elevate (raised beds) to mulch around the bush and make it easier to mow around.

I planted 2 of these in 2007. I made alot of jelly last year even after my 2 & 5yr old helped pick (mostly eat) them. The jelly is a hit with the neighbors and great as an ice cream topping for the kids. A few of my neighbors even asked where to get current bushes of their own. Thanks you so much Gurney's.

This was even better than I expected! I got 6 quarts of jam from the one plant that I harvested! The flavor is similar to that of a cherry, and they are the same size. I will always buy plants from gurneys from now on.
