Comments: Very hardy. Requires thinning for large fruit. Good, but not high flavor. Great sauce and pies. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: APPLE TREES ARE GRAFTED. MIX GENEROUS AMOUNTS OF ORGANIC MATERIAL 15-18 INCHES INTO SOIL BEFORE PLANTING. SEEDS ARE A GOOD INDICATOR OF RIPENESS, WHITE IF FRUIT IS IMMATURE & BROWN WHEN FRUIT IS RIPE. FRUIT SHOULD PART FROM THE STEM EASILY AS WELL. IF STORING OVER WINTER, SELECT BRUISE & BLEMISH FREE FRUIT. WATER TREES DEEPLY IN HOT,DRY,WINDY WEATHER. AFTER 1ST YEAR, FERTILIZE W/ 12-12-12; 1 LB. Nice antique apple. Ripens early. The best for pies and applesauce!! Does not store very well, but it has a great flavor for snacking when ripe. Pick while green for more 'tang'. I'm delighted to see this old apple available from Gurney's it's always been one of my favorites!

Our Yellow Transparent is about 60 years old and still going strong. It only produces every other year. Makes good applesauce, but pick quickly or they'll fall off the tree and spoil easily.

Old apple

very early summer (June to early July in most climates). its only good fresh off the tree does not store well,However when fresh it is juicy and flavorful: excellent for sauce and pies, also used fresh and for drying. Skin of fully ripe fruit is pale yellow, waxy, thin, transparent. In hot summer climates especially, begin picking while fruit is still green and tart. Season lasts 3-4 weeks. Very winter hardy, vigorous, dependable tree begins bearing very young. fast growing heavily-spurred branches. Originated in Russia, introduced to the U.S. in 1870. Estimated chilling requirement 800-1000 hours. I can only give it two stars because its time has past 15 years ago it would have been rated higher. however with the new apple lines this is no longer a winner in my book.
