Saskatoon Blueberry
Saskatoon Blueberry
Hardy in the Far North

  (5 customer reviews)

Not a true blueberry, but it tastes like one and doesn't need acid soil to thrive. Produces a huge July crop. Grows 15-20 feet tall.
Self-pollinating.

Many of the fruits are native species that grow wild in various parts of the country. They are very adaptable and generally carefree. A few are delicious when eaten fresh; others make excellent desserts and wines.

Zones: 2-7.

not so great
Reviewed By: Aimee (Saratoga, NY)
I got 2 Saskatoon "stems" for my boyfriend because he grew up in Saskatchewan. I planted both of them right away and I've been pretty unimpressed. One of them was tiny when it arrived and has hardly grown an inch. The leaves it does have are developing brown spots. It just seems stunted. The second one is a little better, but it was much bigger when it arrived. It has a healthier leaf cover and has probably doubled in height. We're going up to Saskatoon later this year, so I'm going to see if I can get a better stock shipped to us.

Great Looking Plants
Reviewed By: Tom Ashton (Wellsville, Utah)
I have tried traditional blueberries for the past two years. I cannot seem to get the pH right so I am trying Saskatoons or as they are known here, serviceberries. They are native to our area and should do great. I received my plants today from Gurneys. They were bigger than expected, properly packaged, and sweated out in transit. Buds have broken and they are ready to plant. They look just great. I am really pleased with what I received.

great berries

I had a volunteer bush grow with some aspen transplants I took from the ranch to the city. Not knowing what the twig was that was coming up next to the aspen, for two years I mowed it down. I finally let it grow and it was a Saskatoon or Juneberry bush. Beautiful flowers in spring, wonderful berries in summer. I enjoyed it for two years until my daughters dog chewed it off and it never came back! For sure I am buying more, but the dog is not getting near these.
