Hairy Vetch

Hairy Vetch

Ideal for Northern Areas

  (0 customer reviews)

Petite blue flowers appear in midsummer and lure bees and butterflies to the area. This useful yet lovely cover crop grows 2-3 ft. tall and chokes out even the toughest weeds. Great for soil enrichment and erosion control. Easy to grow; vigorous in cooler areas. Best with an inoculant. Plant at a rate of 1 to 2 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.

Product Details
Germination: 10 - 14 days. Ideal temperature for germination is about 68 degrees F. If the soil temperature is too cold, the seed will not germinate. Plant vetch 30 to 45 days before killing frost for winter annual management.
Comments: Our most popular cover crop. In the North, sow in spring or fall at 2 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. In the South, sow in fall. Leaves have higher percentage of nitrogen than all other legumes. Winter-hardy, reliable nitrogen fixer all over the U.S. In north, sow in spring or fall at rate of two lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. In the south, sow in the fall. Either hand broadcast or use a cyclone type spreader. Try to avoid over-seeding. Seed sown too thickly will compete against itself and will not produce as much top growth as seeding more sparingly, according to seed rate recommendations.
