Comments: Winter rye--a great cover crop for the North. Sow rye mid-September through fall at 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Winter rye seed can sprout at 33 degrees F and is very hardy--down to -40 degrees F. Makes a good nurse crop. Turn under in spring before seed heads develop. By turning cover crops under with a spade, rototiller, or plow, humus is added to the soil and essential soil life is promoted. Cover crops should be turned under several weeks before the area is planted with crops in order to allow sufficient decomposition.
