Violet Chocolate Vine

Bears Sweet-Flavored Fruit and Smells Like Chocolate!

  (6 customer reviews)

What could possibly be better in the garden than that? This 15- to 20-ft. vine not only smells like dessert, it also produces loads of lovely lilac-purple flowers from May through June. Hardy in Zones 4-9, Chocolate Vine bears unique, leathery leaves that grow in attractive clusters and are evergreen in milder climates. Can be used as a climber on arbors, trellises and fences or as a lush ground cover. Large, edible seedpods ripen in early autumn and taste like tapioca pudding! Prefers full sun to partial shade. Plant two varieties for pollination. Potted plants.

This item ships at the proper planting time for your region in both spring and fall.
If the current shipping season is closed, your order will ship at the proper time in the next season.

Pathetically small for the price
Reviewed By: Kelly (Falls Church, VA)
I was really surprised when I finally received this. First I had to wait until it was really, really warm outside before they even delivered it. Then it was all of 3 inches tall. I called, and they sent a new one. This one had two branches 1 inch tall, one branch 3 inches, and one branch 5 inches. For the price I would expect more than what later told me was only a "starter plant". In 2 months it's only grown 2 inches! I'll see what it's doing in 10 years-maybe it will have grown. Disappointing.

Smaller than expected

I ordered two of these and got them in the mail today. While they look really healthy, I somewhat expected them to be bigger for $12.95 a pop. The product details don't specify the size, so the description and photo leads you to believe these are bigger plants. They're each about 4 inches tall - hope they grow quick. They're going to look pretty pitiful when I first plant them.

my plants arrived with white leaves and stems. Been in the box for way too long before being shipped. That seems common here. But With very careful introduction to sunlight I will get them to thrive. Gurney really has to start boxing right before shipping. I get most of my plants with white stems and leaves and very few times with green leaves.
