But a total of 4 tomatoes, 4 sad tomatoes. Never again. It would sparsely flower and only a few turned to fruit. I was told to fertilize every time I watered, that did not help either. A waste of precious space in the garden. - Friday, December 28, 2007Ripen already Reviewed By: Coreen (Madison, Wisconsin) I grew these from seed last year. Once the plants were put into the garden, they grew great and got many tomatoes. These tomatoes were so large, it took very long to ripen, and it was the biggest batch that was ready right when it was getting too cool. The ones that we did get early enough tasted great, though. Maybe better for a little warmer climate with more time... - Thursday, January 10, 2008Great but Particular Reviewed By: Deb (Boise City, Oklahoma) I'd give it a five, but... it's a great old heirloom but it's particular about temperature. Here we get about two to three months of 90 and three weeks of that go over 100... and it will not do much. If it's too cold it won't do much. It's great flavored, but. If you hit the right combination, it's worth it's weight in gold, great flavor! And it Produces! If you are on the warm side as it's trying to set good fruit, it won't do well, poor set and not much of it and not very good. Brandywine is a good heirloom that will take hotter weather than Mr. Stripey and has the same structure to the fruit and the size... just not as fancy colored, and a bit different flavor.
