Tougher than its Southern cousin. Tolerates sub-zero temps; consistently produces loads of brilliant red flowers. Leaves turn scarlet in fall. Grows 7-10 ft. tall with a rounded top. Red-tinged, gray-barked branches are heavy with blooms from mid to late summer. Potted plants. Zones 6-9.

Comments: Trees should flower the first season, but will flower more heavily the 2nd or 3rd year. If tree is potted in zone 6 and 7, plade it in an unheated garage or sheltered area outdoors for the winter. This tree is often grown multi-stemmed, with blooms on upper 1/3 of the plant. Likes hot, sunny areas. A very handsome and beautiful all around plant in the landscape. Year round appeal with beautiful vase shaped growth habit. Highly ornamental bark and large profuse flower clisters. Often planted in groups with ground covers beneath. Excellent dwarf variety making it suitable for small gardens and corner spots - even containers. Young branches dark purple becoming gray brown at maturity. I bought this last year, and planted it, and I have to say, it lived, but didn't do that much, it did produce one tiny flower. Which I have to say was disapointing as it was very pink, and not the red that Tonto is said to be. (hence the 4 stars) This year though it's already all fully leaved out and has shown some growth height and width wise and it's only March 30th. I hope that this year it grows much more as its just barely a foot tall now. I have 'high' hopes for it :-) Gurneys really does have good stock!
