Eat these sweet, delicious, bright green kiwis just like grapes—the medium-size fruit has smooth skin! Male plant must be planted for cross-pollination—only the female plant produces fruit. Striking variegated foliage is especially intense in the male plant, with a hot pink, cream and emerald-green pattern. Usually reaches peak color within 2-3 years of planting. Vines do not reach as far as other kiwis, making it easier to train on a fence or trellis. Potted plants. Zones 4-9.

Comments: Usually 1-2 years before variegated leaf color becomes evident; excessive shade and fertilizer reduce leaf coloration. Transplants readily. Tolerates any soil type. Very vigorous, needs considerable pruning. Relatively disease-free. Mulch to retain moisture and keep soil cool. Refrigerate after harvest but store at room temperature a couple of days before use for best flavor. Needs a trellis system. Flowers on one year old wood. May take 7-10 years for them to bear.

Worth the wait

I ordered a pair of these in 2007. I built a very sturdy trellis on faith, and finally, in 2009, I had a stalk reach the top of the trellis. I have fruit this year, but I'm not sure when it will be ripe. This plant has a high barrier to growing (building a trellis) and requires patience, but I think it was worth it!

I bought a pair of these plants 2 years ago. They were very slow to grow the first year because of little rain. Last year they started to take off. This spring they grew with vigor one would have to see to believe. The deer niped the new shoots in the spring, but they recovered with vigor. I am hoping now to see them set fruit. I couldn't be happier with their amazing vigor.
