In fact, it put on leaves and flowers before almost any other plant. However, why is it called "blue" pincushion when the blooms are definitely purple?  -  Monday, June 25, 2007 Great addition Reviewed By: Christie (Wichita, Kansas) This plant has become one of my favorites in my garden. I have about 6 plants now and they bloom like crazy. I always get compliments on them. These bring such a bright spot to my garden. They have also brought beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds to my garden. This totally amazes the kids. I have even had them blooming in the winter. I do have them hidden from the north wind along with my elephant ears that are not suppose to winter here either. They are not as many blooms and they don't get as big but it is nice to see color out there when everything else is dead.
