Slow Grower
Reviewed By: Scott (Knoxville, TN)
Planted about 6 years ago. It has grown probably 5 feet in 6 years. Very thin, sparse foliage. Barely casts a shadow. As a disclaimer, it was planted in very poor clayey soil. It was kept watered for two years and has been fertilized every year.

I purchased this tree three years ago as a "try and see". The Elm tree was highly planted in the 40's and 50's in the treebare Dakotas, but was nearly wiped out twenty years ago with the Dutch Elm disease. We had one of the few that survived in a house we lived in a few years back. I planted the tree at the side of a childrens play area that had small pea rock. The location was quite wet and prooved to be excellent as this tree is a healthy 40 feet tall.

Importance of Reviews

I read reviews and use them to determine if a product is right for me. I'm sure others do the same. We are thinking of purchasing the Hybrid Elm but the Ash Borer Review made me pause. So, this time, I did research. The only tree the Ash borer attacks is the Genus Fraxinus. So the gentleman either had an Ash planted or a true elm or non-Dutch Elm resistant tree which the Elm Bark beetle carries and infects Elm. Nothing that I read ever mentioned one case of Hybrid Elm being attacked by ash borer. Not to say the gentleman is lying. He may not. But without sufficient support, I have to see the Hybrid Elm as being a good investment. Unless, of course, Gurneys is selling Ash trees as Elms. :) I'll review again later after we get our trees!

great tree

This was a great, fast-growing tree for our front yard. But after 6 years, the Junebugs got it. It was heartbreaking to see such a big tree (by that time it was 25-30' high) die. We plan to buy another, but this time protect it better.

Great Tree
Reviewed By: Joe Ruzsbanszki (Wellington, Ohio)
I ordered 2 hybrid elms last spring of 2007. I watered them weekly and used tree spikes to keep them fertilized. One tree didn't make it and Gurneys replaced it with hesitation. Will buy from them again and already have. The other elm tree took off. It grew about six ft the first season. I'm looking forward to see how tall it gets this season. Also the replacement elm Gurneys sent me seems to be doing fine.
