Graceful vase-shaped shade tree has elliptical, dark green foliage. Displays showy fall mix of yellow, rust, bronze, dark red and purple. Attractive steel-gray bark exfoliates to expose orange shading beneath. Good street tree; tolerates urban conditions. Popular as a superior replacement for the American Elm. Grows rapidly to 50-75 ft. with 40- to 50-ft. spread. Bareroot. Zones 5-8.

Great tree---but

A great fast-growing and nice looking tree, but deer love to eat the leaves. So protect when small if you live in deer country. But the real problem with a mature tree is that the weak wood the fact that it retains leaves late in the fall results in serious damage if there is an early wet snowfall. I lost my beauty due to the snow damage. Just planted two replacements and hoping for better luck.

I purchased 5 of these about 3 years ago. I was so excited I planted three of them the day they arrived, ignoring the planting instructions. These were bare root plants. I read the planting instructions and realized I was to have soaked the trees roots prior to planting. I soaked the final two trees roots overnight and planted them. Of the three that I did not soak, I lost one. These also did not grow very fast the first two years. The two that I did soak took off and have grown quite nicely. The ones that were not soaked are suddenly spurting. One is 3/4 the height of my largest soaked one and the other is 2/3 the height of the largest soaked one. The two unsoaked ones are finally taking off. I did use one of the deep soaker waterers that you push into the ground which delivers water to the root zone during the first two years. The summers here in the Mid-south are brutal (100F can occur for a month straight) and we've had colder winters than usual (10 F or less). Overall, I'm pleased with the Zelkovas. I've done some corrective pruning as I had read that these trees benefit from shaping in youth. All four that I've got have grown a good 1-2 feet this year alone. Be sure to read the planting procedure for bare root plants. The plants will benefit from it!

Great Japanese Zelkova

I thought mine was dead when it arrived. A long but scrawny looking thing. I decided to plant it before complaining. Within days it was sprouting new leaves & twigs. I got it in April so I've had it about 7 months. It's now more than twice its original height & looks great. I'll be ordering 2 or 3 more.
